I'm sorry Kelli. I have experiened this very same trauma. I come from a family of cat people, which means we're stupid enough to fall in love with strays. This one I labeled Mooch. Mooch rocked. He had attitude. He'd holler at you in cat speak if he was done with the house. He'd bite your ankles non-stop until you let him out. Sometimes he'd come back in a few hours, sometimes a few days. But he always came back. When we had to move, we obviouslay had to take him with us but we were afriad to let him out. Eventually, we had to because he was literally climbing the walls and torturing the other cats. A neighbor at our previous home said he found his way back--someone had hit him on the road beside our house.

But that wasn't even the worst. The worst thing for me was when I had to put my cat to sleep. His name was Pussface and I got him when I was in 4th grade. He was about 15 when his organs started to fail and we had to put him down. At that point I had that cat for more than half of my entire life and I shit you not, I had an epic meltdown when I watched him die. It was awful. I cried for 2 days. I kept saying I would never get another cat because I couldn't do that again--and then I adopted 3 kittens. (I'm such an idiot.)

*clarification. The kennel had given Max the pig ear as a treat. I called the Kennel and told them what had happened and I wanted them to pay for the vet bill. They said they would only pay half. Me, being the pacifist that I am, decided that was agreeable. They NEVER sent me payment. (go figure!) If I had the money, I would have sued them.

The worst loss I had with a pet? Hands down my pitbull Max. We had to take our stupid yearly visit to North Carolina. I didn't want to go. We had no one to watch Max. So, I decided to put him up at a Kennel.

We get back, I pick up Max and notice his attitude has changed immensely. He was no longer the happy go lucky Max that I had left. Instead, he had turned into an angry, agitated, stereotypical pitbull. Something was NOT right.

We get home and a couple days later he starts vomiting, so I decide it was time to call the Vet. Long story short, he had a pig ear stuck in his intestines. The vet said she could get him into surgery but the probability that he would come through it was pretty low. And, it would also cost a couple of grand; which we did not have.

I had to decide if he needed to be put down or not. Called Brian, sobbing and explained what had happened, and we both decided it was best that he be put down. I have NEVER cried over a pet like that before. Hell, even THE VET cried, because she loved Max and in her words, "was the best patient she had ever had.."
